Nonprofit vs. For-Profit: What's the Difference?

Nonprofits and for-profit businesses serve different goals. Knowing those differences helps you choose the structure that best fits your mission and funding model.

Nonprofits

Purpose

Created to serve a charitable, educational, or community-focused mission—not to generate profit for individuals.

Use of Funds

Any surplus is reinvested into programs and operations that advance the organization’s cause.

Tax Benefits

May qualify for federal and state tax exemptions, including 501(c)(3) status that allows donors to make tax-deductible contributions.

Governance

Managed by a board of directors or trustees who make decisions in the organization’s best interest, not for personal gain.

Accountability

Must maintain transparent records, file required reports and comply with both state and IRS regulations.

Funding Sources

Rely primarily on donations, grants, and fundraising rather than product sales or investor returns.

For-Profits

Purpose

Formed to earn income for their owners, members, or shareholders.

Use of Funds

Profits can be distributed to owners or reinvested to support growth and personal income goals.

Tax Obligations

Pay income taxes on business profits; owners may also owe personal taxes depending on the business structure.

Ownership

Can be owned and managed by individuals, partners, members (in LLCs), or shareholders (in corporations).

Flexibility

Enjoy broad discretion in how profits are used, invested, or distributed.

Funding Sources

Generate revenue primarily from product sales, services, loans, or outside investments (not donations or grants).

Great Customer Service
I had a lot of questions in setting up the non-profit for my high school hockey team, and as a result I contacted customer support on multiple occasions. Shannel B. actually helped me on more than one occasion and was remarkably good at her job. She not only solved any issues and answered all my (many) questions, but she managed to do so efficiently and quickly. She is also really really skilled at being personable, helpful, and uplifting through chat support. Thanks to her I have an extremely positive impression of Beacon!
